“For if the trumpet  give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.  There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me. Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. (1 Cor 14:8-13)

I.   This pattern is from the Church in the wilderness
The Lord spake unto Moses, saying, “Make thee two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make
them: that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps.”
(Num 10:1-2, 1 Cor.10:11, Rom.15:4     I.     God communicated with Sounds        There was a “sound” that assured the people that Aaron was functioning as high           priest. (Exod.28:35) Noah heard the sound) There was a trumpet sound at           Jubilee. (Lev.25 This was every 50 yrs.) Jericho fell at the sound. (Josh.6:5)           Solomon’s Temple – one sound (2 Chron.5) A sound from trumpets to come to           battle (Neh.4:20) There is a joyful sound. (Psa.89:15)Num.10:10 A solemn sound         (Psa.92:3) Num.10:10 A sound of battle (Jer.50:22) Num.10:10 There is a sound of         alarm. (Joel2:1, Num.10:10) Can hear the “sound” of the Spirit. (John.3:8) Sound         assoc. with the gifts (1Cor.12- 14) A sound of a mighty rushing wind. (Acts.2:1-2)         The voice of Jesus was as a trumpet. (Rev.1:10-20)           A.       This sound was a once a year sound           B.       This sound was an announcement that this feast was open           C.      This sound was a commitment towards “the day” II.    How is our hearing?        Jesus said, “Blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. For           verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see              those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things           which ye hear, and have not heard them.” (Matt.13:16-17, John.10:27)           A.       Jesus said that you can hear the voice of God”                     My “sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”                     (John 10:27-28) What is the problem then?                     1.       Maybe you are not His sheep?                     2.       Maybe you don’t want to listen?                     3.       Maybe you are afraid of hearing as Israel was. (Exod.19)?                     4.       Maybe you are hearing but it is not happening like others say it is                               happening. (2 Cor.12:10-12)                               Note: Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord, and heard God’s voice.                               In fact God told Noah, “for thee have I seen…” (Gen.7:1) God found him!                               ( 2 Chron.16:9, 1 Pet.3:12)           B.       The Spirit of God is saying the same thing to everyone                     1.       God is no respecter of persons. The problem is, how are we hearing.                     2.       Many are like lot who are “seeing and hearing to unlawful deeds of the                               World” (2 Pet.2:) and are building with wood, hay and stubble and will                               miss “the day.”                     3.       Perhaps you are like the two on the way to Emmaus. Their theology was                               wrong, which made the hearing dull. (Heb.5:13-14)           C.      Isaac’s hearing                     The voice is the voice of Jacob…(Gen.27:1, 22) but he could not see, and                     therefore he ignored his sense of hearing.                     1.       We have five spiritual senses                               But “strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by                               reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”                               (Heb 5:14)                               a.       Taste (Col.2:21, 1 Pet.2:3)                               b.       Feel (Acts.17:2)                               c.       See (Eph.1:18,Matt.13:16, Luke.24:16, 25-44, 2 Cor.3:13-16)                               d.       Hear (Rev.2:7, 17, 29, John.10:27)                               e.       Smell (Discernment Gen.8:20, Lev.20:31, Amos.5:21, Phil.4:18, 2                                         Cor.2:14, 1Cor.12:17)                     2.       Isaac would have understood his hearing if eyes were not dim.                               (Gen.27                               a.       The example of Lot                                         He had separated himself from understanding the vision and purpose                                            of  God, and “day to day” his sight was “vexed…with their (Sodom’s)                                         unlawful deeds.” (2 Pet.2:8)                                         (1)      Daily vexing will ruin your seeing and hearing                                         (2)      Dwelling among them will ruin your seeing and hearing                                                   (a)      Lot became an “appeaser” (Gen.19:4-11)                                                   (b)      His family was out of order. (Gen.19:)                                                   (c)      He argued about with God (Gen.19)           D.      A “blemished ear” will limit your hearing           E.       Eli knew the voice                     Eli had enough sense to tell the next gen. what to listen for (response) Type your paragraph here.
